Controversial Appointment Of ECs CEC: The Supreme Court has today given a historic verdict on the appointment of the Election Commissioner.  According to this decision of the Supreme Court, now the Prime Minister (PM), the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the CJI will jointly select the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.  The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court said that the appointment of the Election Commissioner should also be on the lines of the CBI Director.
  5-judge bench of the Supreme Court, in a 5-0 unanimous decision, said that the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners will be selected by the President on the advice of a three-member committee.  A division bench headed by Justice KM Joseph has said in its decision, this rule will continue until the Parliament makes a law for these appointments.
  The SC has upheld the appointment of the Election Commissioner directly by the government.  During the hearing in the court, Justice Rastogi agreed with the decision of Justice Joseph.  During this, Justice Rastogi said that the process of removal of Election Commissioners should also be similar to the process of removal of the Central Election Commissioner.
