Petitions Against Demonetisation: The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will hear on October 12 the petitions challenging the Centre's decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in 2016. Justice S. a. A constitution bench headed by Nazir said that if the petitions have been filed from the point of view of an in-principle process, then cognizance will be taken. In this bench, Justice B. R. Gavai, Justice A. s. Bopanna, Justice V. Ramasubramaniam and Justice B. V. Nagarathna was also involved. The bench was hearing 58 petitions challenging the November 8, 2016 decision of the Centre.
On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes would cease to be legal tender in India from midnight. Modi had said that the decision has been taken to "fight corruption, black money and terrorism". After demonetisation, Rs 2,000 notes and Rs 500 notes were introduced with a new design.
