Renowned archaeologist and Tamil epigraphy expert V. Vedachalam has been awarded the Tamil Vicky Suran Award to mark his 51st year in the field. The award was given to him for his long and dedicated work in the field of history and archaeology in Madurai (Tamil Nadu). Even at the age of 75, Vedachalam continues to inspire many with his dedication and commitment.
Shri Vedachalam began his career after completing an MA in Tamil Literature and a Post Graduate Diploma in Archaeology and Epigraphy. His first significant project was in Karur, the capital of the ancient Chera dynasty. There he helped unearth a part of the old fort wall. This marked the beginning of a deep interest and dedication to history in his life.
His deep understanding of the Tamil language made him a skilled epigraphist, who reads and deciphers ancient writings engraved on stones and walls. Once, while exploring Vikramangalam, he lay down on the edge of a rock and saw a 2,000-year-old inscription on the ceiling, hidden for centuries. That discovery, Vedachalam says, was a moment in his life that was filled with pure joy.
