Chief Justice of India: Justice Chandrachud will be the 50th Chief Justice, CJI UU Lalit announces the name of the successor

Justice DY Chandrachud: Chief Justice of India UU Lalit has recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor.  Justice Chandrachud will be the 50th CJI.  Chief Justice UU Lalit is retiring on November 8 this year.  Justice Chandrachud will take over as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022 for a period of two years.  This is one of the longest periods for the CJI in recent times.
As per convention, the Chief Justice recommends the name of the second senior most judge to the government.  Justice DY Chandrachud is the second senior-most judge after Justice UU Lalit.  CJI U U Lalit recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor in a meeting of all the judges of the Supreme Court at 10:15 am on Tuesday.  The recommendation of CJI Lalit will be sent in the form of a letter to the Law Ministry.
