UNESCO, promoting this diversity of people, had announced to celebrate 21st February as International Mother Language Day in the year 1999. According to UNESCO, there are 8,324 languages across the world, out of which 7,000 languages are still in use. But, these languages are rapidly disappearing. In such a situation, International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year to keep these disappearing languages in use.
This year UNESCO is celebrating International Mother Language Day on the theme "Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day". On this day, programs related to reading poems, storytelling in different languages and cultural music are being organized.
