The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) installed and commissioned India's largest climate clock at the CSIR headquarters building on Rafi Marg, New Delhi, as part of a function to mark Earth Day.  This event shows CSIR’s objective of spreading awareness about climate change and its worst effects.

Speaking on the occasion, Chetan Singh Solanki, professor at IIT- Bombay and founder of Energy Swaraj Foundation, said that there was an urgent need for every citizen of the country to become energy literate.  He said every citizen should take steps to avoid or reduce energy use as much as possible.

Former Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences and Director, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Dr.  Shailesh Nayak delivered the CSIR Amrit Lecture on “Unraveling the Mysteries of Provoked Earthquakes: The Lighthouse Project of Scientific Drilling in Koyna”.  CSIR is conducting Accelerated Modern Research, Innovation and Technology (AMRIT) Lecture Series.  It aims to learn from the ideas and lessons of India's leading science and technology personalities, who can help guide the work of R&D organizations in general and CSIR in particular.

CSIR Director General Dr.  N.S.  Kalaiselvi addressed the programme.  “Earth Day is a reminder for us to protect the environment.  He informed that a large number of scientists and staff at CSIR have received energy literacy training under the CSIR-Energy Swaraj Foundation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).  Climate watches provided by the Foundation have been installed in more and more CSIR laboratories."
