Today, Indian Railways has one of the largest rail networks in the world.  On average, more than 10,000 trains run through the country every day, with millions of people traveling daily.  But do you know when and where the first Indian Train ran in the country?  Let us tell you about the glorious history of Indian Railways which has completely changed the way people walk in the country today and made it very easy to get from one city to another.
Trains in India date back to the British era.  In fact, in 1832, the idea of running trains in India was first considered.  At that time, trains were just starting in Britain.  The British knew that they would benefit greatly from running trains in a vast country like India.  In 1844, Lord Hardinge, then Governor-General of India, devoted himself to the work.
The British then formed two companies, the East Indian Railway Company and the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, to bring trains to India.  After which the railway work in the country started to accelerate.
After all these efforts, the first train in the country started on April 16, 1853, 170 years ago.  The first train in the country ran between Boribandar in then Bombay and Thane.  The train left Mumbai at 3.35 pm and reached Thane at 4.45 pm.
