In January 2026, the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed distinguished scientist A.K. Balasubrahmanian as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), India’s premier apex nuclear safety regulator. Balasubrahmanian has been appointed for a three-year tenure, succeeding Dr. D.K. Shukla, who concluded his term on December 31, 2025. This strategic appointment brings to the helm of AERB a veteran nuclear scientist with nearly four decades of comprehensive expertise in nuclear power plant design, development, safety, and commissioning—ensuring continuity in India’s commitment to world-class nuclear safety standards and regulatory excellence.
