Top female table tennis player Manika Batra moved up to a career-best singles ranking of 24 after a spectacular performance at the Saudi Smash, becoming the first Indian female table tennis player to crack the top 25 in the world rankings.  The 28-year-old Khel Ratna Award winner, who was ranked 39th before the tournament, made it to the quarter-finals in Jeddah and managed to jump 15 places with her performance.
Manika, the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist in the individual and team categories, had an upside during her journey to the last eight at the Saudi smash by defeating multiple world champion and Olympic gold medalist China’s Wang Manyu (second seed).  It was the first time an Indian woman player had advanced so far in the tournament.  Manika got 350 points for this performance.  She said it would boost her morale ahead of the Paris Olympics in July.
