Padmashree awardee and former director of the Indian Drug Research Department, Dr Nityananda, died of cardiac arrest at SGPGI on Saturday. On 29 November 2023, he was admitted to the ICU of SGPGI due to ill health. Since then his treatment was going on under the supervision of specialist doctors. Dr. Nityananda was 99 years old.
Dr. Nityananda joined the Indian Department of Drug Research (CDRI), Lucknow in 1951. He was the Director of CDRI from 1974 to 1984. During this time, she played an important role in making the world's first non-steroid contraceptive pill. Because of this, the name of Dr. Nityananda is known all over the world. Steroids were not used in the contraceptive pill made by Dr. Nityananda. Later this contraceptive pill became famous by the name 'Saheli'. Apart from this, he played an important role in discovering drugs helpful in the treatment of serious diseases like malaria, leprosy and TV. Dr. Nityanand is also considered to be the father of the currently popular generic pharma. He made great contributions in the field of pharmaceutical research and science. For this, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri award in the year 2012.
