Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud announced on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day that a plan has been prepared for the expansion of the Supreme Court of India. The CJI said it plans to expand the Supreme Court by constructing a new building for 27 additional courts, 51 judges’ chambers, 4 registrar court rooms, 16 registrar chambers and other necessary facilities for lawyers and plaintiffs.
The CJI stressed the need to make courts accessible and inclusive and said that we need to repair our judicial infrastructure on a priority basis. The CJI said that emphasis is being placed on modernization of judicial infrastructure to meet future challenges.
In the first phase, the museum and annexure building will be demolished and a new building will be constructed for 15 court rooms, judges' chambers, SCBA library, offices of SCBA and SCAORA presidents, vice presidents and secretaries, SCBA executive meeting . . . . In addition, room for lawyers and plaintiffs, canteen, ladies bar room and other facilities will be emphasized.
CJI DY Chandrachud said that technology is the best option we have to eliminate inefficiency and ambiguity around judicial processes. He said that the full potential of technology has to be used.
He said the Supreme Court is working on the third phase of the e-court project. It aims to revolutionize the functioning of courts in India by connecting all courts across the country, establishing paperless court infrastructure, digitizing court records.
“Our aim is to create a judicial system that is more accessible and affordable for every person seeking justice,” the CJI said. “Since I assumed office as the Chief Justice of India, the Supreme Court has developed several IT projects. such as online portal for RTI, ESCR, online attendance portal for advocates.
The Chief Justice of India said that recent initiatives of the Supreme Court such as live streaming of court proceedings, translation of judgments from English into local languages and live transcription of court proceedings will contribute to the transparency of our legal processes.
