Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has invited ULFA-Independent commander Paresh Baruah as a guest to Assam.  Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the ULFA chief should see a changed Assam.  Himanta Biswa Sarma invited ULFA (I) chief Paresh Baruah to visit the state as a 'guest' and witness the changed situation after decades.
 ULFA is considered a militant organization by the Government of India and has been banned.  ULFA-I has been demanding an independent Assam and wants to separate the territory from India.  Former ULFA-I commander Paresh Baruah has been the leading face of separatist movements in the North East.
  ULFA-I led by Paresh Baruah has carried out several violent activities in Assam.  A few years ago, ULFA-I kidnapped three employees of India's giant petroleum company ONGC.  In 2020, ULFA-I and NSCN-K jointly kidnapped two employees of Delhi-based oil and gas company Quippo for ransom.  However, both were later released unharmed.
  CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that Paresh Baruag should spend at least a week here to witness the transformation of Assam.  CM  said, "Paresh Baruah himself is a knowledgeable person. It doesn't mean he will come because I have invited him. He has his wisdom and logic. However, I think if he just seven days in Assam."  stay, they will realize that old Assam has changed a lot."
