President Vladimir Putin issued a stern warning to NATO member Poland on Friday, saying any aggression against Russia's neighbor and close ally Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia.
“Moscow will react to any aggression against Belarus,” Putin said in televised remarks at a Security Council meeting. "We will respond in all the ways available to us," he said.
In his remarks, Putin also said that the western part of Poland was a gift to the country from Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and that Russia would remind the Poles about it.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, meanwhile, tweeted on Friday evening: “Stalin was a war criminal, guilty of the deaths of thousands of Polish people. Historical truth is beyond debate.' "The Russian ambassador will be summoned by the Foreign Ministry," he added.
On Thursday, Belarus said Wagner's mercenaries had begun training Belarusian special forces at a military range just miles from the Polish border.
Russia has begun deploying strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus for the first time in recent weeks. The Kremlin said Putin would meet in Russia on Sunday with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, with whom he speaks regularly.
Germany and NATO stand ready to support Poland in defending the eastern part of the military alliance, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Friday .
