A Surat court has convicted Rahul Gandhi and sentenced him to two years in jail in the Modi surname defamation case.  The court granted Rahul Gandhi immediate bail in the case.  During the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign, Rahul Gandhi had commented on Prime Minister Modi's surname, saying, "How about Modi, the name of all thieves?"  A defamation case was filed against him over the statement.  Congress and BJP are attacking each other after Rahul's conviction.  After the conviction, Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence.  Truth is my God, non-violence is the means of attaining it- Mahatma Gandhi."
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, “The whole machinery of scared power is trying to suppress the voice of Rahul Gandhi by using Sam, Dam, Dand, Bhed.  My brother never afraid, nor will  ever be afraid.  We have lived to tell the truth, we will continue to tell the truth.  He will continue to raise the voice of the people of the country."
