The stately Belgium Embassy—a modernist masterpiece designed by Satish Gujral—became the perfect setting for an evening dedicated to celebrating renowned author Namita Gokhale, who has just come out with her 25th book, Life on Mars: Collected Stories.
I wrote my first book at 26,” recalled Gokhale, whose debut novel Paro: Dreams of Passion, dubbed a cult classic, was published in 1984. “I was talking to my agent, and she said, ‘Don’t be happy just yet. You’ll be happy when you have a bookshelf full of books.’” But now, standing before an audience and looking back at a body of work spanning decades, she admitted, “It does make me feel very happy to see those books piled up and coming back to me from unexpected places.”
