The Union Home Ministry has approved the renaming of Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra to Ahilyanagar. State Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil made the announcement on Friday. Patil told the media that the decision to change the name of Ahmednagar was taken by the state cabinet in March this year and approval was sought from the Centre. He said that Ahilyabai Holkar, the ruler of Indore (Madhya Pradesh) in the 18th century, was from this district. Earlier, the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde government had changed the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv respectively.
