India Most Expensive City: Mumbai is the most expensive city in India in the eyes of expatriates

Mumbai, the country's financial capital and home to the Hindi film industry, still remains the country's most expensive city for expatriates.  According to Mercer’s 2024 Cost of Living Survey, Mumbai is notably expensive in terms of personal care, energy and utilities, transportation and housing rent.  For information, globally, Hong Kong retains its position as the most expensive city.

 In the list, Mumbai has climbed 11 places to 136th, while Delhi has moved up four places to 164th.  In contrast, Chennai dropped five notches to 189th, Bengaluru moved six notches to 195th, and Hyderabad remained at 202nd.  Meanwhile, Pune has climbed eight notches to 205th position, and Kolkata has climbed four notches to 207th position.
