Internationaldesk:

Military dictator and interim president of the Central African country of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has won the May 6, 2024 presidential election.  The provisional results were announced on May 10, 2024 by the country's National Election Management Agency.

Mahamat Idriss Deby seized power in 2021 with the support of fellow army generals and became the country's interim president after the death of his father, President Idriss Deby.  President Idriss Deby was assassinated by rebels in northern Chad in 2021, soon after he was elected president for a sixth term.

President Idriss Deby was a dictator who firmly ruled the country from 1990 to 2021 for 30 years.

The election will legitimize the rule of Mahamat Idris Deby Itno for the next six years.
