The Laxman Tirtha River dried up due to drought and severe heat

Located in Kodagu district of Karnataka, the Laxman Tirtha River is famous for its picturesque hills, dense forests and crystal-clear rivers.  However, due to ongoing severe drought conditions and scorching heat, the river is facing serious water crisis.  Another important water source in the district, the Cauvery river has also reduced its flow, and as a result, the Lakshman Tirtha river has dried up completely.
 The Lakshmana Tirtha River originates from dense forests at Kutta in Ponnampet taluk and extends for about 180 km before merging with the Cauvery through Piyapatna and Hunsur in Mysore.
 Laxman Tirtha has dried up due to lack of rainfall.  This can be attributed to the extreme weather conditions caused by 40% less rainfall in Kodagu last year.
 Smaller rivers in the hills dried up in early February as groundwater levels fell across the district due to lack of adequate rainfall.
 As a result, the flow in the rivers has decreased, resulting in the complete drying up of both the Laxman Teerth and Cauvery rivers.
