Six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom on Friday stepped down as India's campaign chief for the upcoming Paris Olympics. She said she no longer had a choice for personal reasons.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P T Usha said Mary Kom had written to her asking her to resign from the responsibility. “It is a matter of pride to serve the country in any form and I was mentally prepared for it. But I am sorry that I will not be able to take this responsibility. I’m withdrawing for personal reasons,” she said.
She said ,“I am embarrassed to back out like this because I don’t do that but I have no choice. I will always be there to encourage my athletes who are participating in the Olympic Games.” The IOA had announced her appointment on 21 March.
