The Nepal Army will collect about 10 tonnes of garbage and five bodies lying on Mount Everest as part of the Mountain Cleanup Campaign A 12-member team led by Major Aditya Karki will leave for Everest Base Camp on April 14 to fetch garbage from Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse and Mount Nuptse. An 18-member Sherpa team will assist the army in the clean-up operation.
Army Chief General Prabhuram Sharma will give the green light to the team in Kathmandu on April 11, Nepal Army spokesman Brigadier General Krishna Prasad Bhandari said on Sunday. The biodegradable waste will be brought to Namche market below the base camp. He will be handed over to Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee for proper treatment. Non-biodegradable waste and carcasses will be brought to Kathmandu. The clean-up drive will help effectively control man-made pollution in the Himalayas.
