Sumit Nagal became the first Indian to win the Monte Carlo Masters main draw by defeating Italy's Matteo Arnaldi in the first round on Monday.
The 95th-ranked Nagal, who is only the third Indian to join the main draw in Monte Carlo after Vijay Amritraj (1977) and Ramesh Krishnan (1982), came back from trailing by a set to World No. 35 Arnaldi two hours 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in 37 minutes to record his third win over a top-50 player.
Since the tournament began in 1990, Nagal is also the first Indian to win an ATP Masters 1000 match on clay. Nagal will next face seventh-seeded Dane and last year’s runner-up Holger Rune.
