Gi Tag : GI tag will double income of Bundelkhand farmers

Gi Tag : Kathia wheat of Bundelkhand has already been famous. It is also delicious and rich in nutrients to eat.  Kathia wheat is rich in carbohydrates, antioxidants, vitamin A, iron and zinc.  Kathia wheat is beneficial for many diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, etc.  It contains about 1.5 - 2 percent protein.  This is why doctors also suggest patients to eat Kathia wheat porridge.
Under the guidance of Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Rani Laxmi Bai Central Agricultural University, Jhansi, agricultural scientists have been doing extension work on Kathia wheat in the fields of farmers in Jhansi, Datia, Mauranipur, Bangra, Lalitpur and other areas.  Director Extension Education Dr. SS Singh said that after getting GI tag, the income of farmers growing kathia wheat in Bundelkhand will definitely double as it is sold in the market at Rs 1,000 higher than normal wheat.  After receiving the GI tag, the Vice-Chancellor praised the team working on kathia wheat.
He said that NABARD had launched a campaign to get GI tag (Geographical Indication) in 2021 to give it market scope and international recognition.  The Government of India has given direct benefit to the farmers producing kathia wheat by approving GI tag for kathia wheat.  The University of Agriculture has worked with several FPOs on kathia wheat in Rabi 2023 under the Front Line Demonstration.  20 farmers of Bangra Producer Company Limited, which has received GI tag status, were given 8 quintals of improved variety of Kathia wheat from Indore.  The scientific team continuously monitored this and from time to time provided various technical information to the farmers as well as other help.  FPO was given new variety of Indore kathia wheat HI8759 farmers.
