Newsdesk:
Mercedes-Benz is adding Apptronik's Apollo humanoid robots to its factories. The two companies announced the same in a statement. The announcement suggests Mercedes may use Apollo to inspect vehicle parts, bring parts to the assembly line for human workers to assemble, and deliver kitted parts, to name a few potential use cases.
Apollo, according to the company, has a form factor that roughly matches the size of a human worker (5 foot 8 inches tall and approximately 73 KG in weight with the ability to lift around 24KG), is built to operate in industrial spaces alongside people. The robot's run time is 4 hours per battery pack. Hot swappable battery packs are said to allow Apollo to continue working with a simple battery change instead of a plug-in charge during which time it is not operational. If desired, Apollo can be plugged into charge or tethered for continuous operation.
Apollo is modular and can be mounted to any mobility platform, stationary, or fully mobile with legs. The robot has LEDs in head, Mouth, and Chest all working together to communicate status. Prior to developing Apollo, some of the Apptronik team helped build NASA's 6'2 Valkyrie robot. The company first announced Apollo in August 2023.
