SBI seeks deadline till June 30 to provide information on electoral bonds, SC had fixed deadline

The Supreme Court had declared the electoral bond scheme "unconstitutional" and directed political parties to share information about donations received from electoral bonds.  The court had given the bank till March 6, 2024 to do so.  SBI has now approached the Supreme Court seeking an extension of the deadline.

 State Bank of India (SBI) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an extension of time till June 30, 2024 to provide information to the Election Commission regarding the election bonds.  In its petition, SBI said the court had directed the court to make the donor's details public from the date of its interim order on April 12, 2019 till the date of the judgment on  During that period, twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventeen (22,217) electoral bonds were used to make donations to various political parties.

 SBI further said that the repaid bonds were deposited in sealed envelopes by the authorized branch at the end of each phase at the Mumbai main branch.  With the fact that two separate information silos exist, this would mean a total of 44,434 information sets to decode, compile and compare.  It is therefore respectfully submitted that the time limit of three weeks fixed by the Court in its judgment dated 15.02.2024 will not be sufficient to complete the entire process.  Therefore, an extension of time may be granted by this Hon'ble Court to enable SBI to comply with the judgment.
