Politician Shashi Tharoor was given the highest civilian honor in France on Tuesday. Tharoor was honored with the prestigious award 'Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur' by French Senate President Gerard Larcher at a ceremony at the French Embassy. French Senate Speaker Larcher said, Dr. Tharoor is also a true friend of France. Tharoor is a Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and the author of many popular books.
The French government had announced to give the award to former Union Minister Tharoor in August 2022. Now he was given this award on Tuesday. The French Embassy issued a statement and said, the highest French civilian award is given in recognition of Dr. Tharoor's tireless efforts to deepen India-France relations, commitment to international peace and cooperation and as a long-time friend of France.
French Senate Speaker Larcher gave this honor to Tharoor. Through his distinguished career as a diplomat, writer and politician, Shashi Tharoor has embraced the world with an intelligence that has led him to live many lives simultaneously, Larcher said. He further said, Dr. Tharoor is also a true friend of France and he is also a French speaker with a deep understanding of French culture. I have the privilege of giving this award. The French Republic recognizes your achievements, your friendship, your love for France.
