International Mother Language Day 2024: International Mother Language Day is being celebrated today. Around the world, language is a tool that connects people to each other and reflects their culture. There can be many mother tongues in a country. In India alone, there are 122 such languages, the number of speakers of which is more than 10 thousand. There are 29 languages which are spoken by 10 lakh people. Languages spoken include Hindi, English, Bengali, Punjabi, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Mandarin and Spanish. International Mother Language Day is celebrated every year on 21 February with the aim of promoting linguistic and cultural diversity in the world and bringing awareness to many mother tongues.
The theme of the International Mother Language Day celebration 2024 is “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning”. Today, 250 million children and young people still do not attend school and 763 million adults do not master basic literacy skills. Mother tongue education supports learning, literacy and the acquisition of additional languages.
