A month before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections, the Supreme Court will give its verdict today on the validity of electoral bonds. This decision is going to be very important before the Lok Sabha elections. The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court had started regular hearing on this matter from October 31 last year. During this period, the court heard this case for 3 consecutive days.
The case was heard by a five-member Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. In this constitution bench, along with the CJI, there were Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra. During the hearing, arguments were given from both the petitioner side and the opposition. The court had reserved the decision after seriously listening to all the parties from October 31 to November 2.
This bond was launched in the year 2018. The idea behind implementing this was that it would increase transparency in political funding and bring in clean money. In this, individuals, corporates and institutions buy bonds and give them as donations to political parties and the political parties get the money by encashing these bonds in the bank. 29 branches of State Bank of India were authorized to issue and encash electoral bonds. These branches are in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Chandigarh, Patna, Ranchi, Guwahati, Bhopal, Jaipur and Bengaluru.
