The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the state government against the Karnataka High Court's decision to release the accused in the journalist Gauri Lankesh murder case. On an order of the High Court, an accused in the Lankesh murder case was released in December last year. The accused himself had conspired to murder the journalist and had hired the killers. Journalist's sister Kavita Lankesh had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the release of the killer.
Gauri Lankesh was in Bengaluru, Karnataka, when she was shot dead outside her house in 2017. India Today had told in an exclusive report that Ram Sena had a hand in the Gauri Lankesh murder case. For example, Amol Kale, the mastermind of the Lankesh murder case, was the convenor of Hindu Janajagruti Samit and the other accused Amit Degvekar was a seeker in some Sanatan organization. The SIT formed to investigate the murder had found that the murder of Gauri Lankesh was planned a year before the murder.
According to Karnataka Police, Gauri Lankesh was shot by Parashuram Waghmer, a member of Shri Ram Sena. According to India Today report, Waghmer was sent by the mastermind of the massacre to commit the murder saying that it would protect Hindu religion. For this he was also given training in firing. He reached Bengaluru in July 2017 and committed the murder on 5 September.
