Pollution in the country's capital Delhi is discussed as if it is the most polluted city of India, but it is not so.  According to a recently released report, Byrnihat in Meghalaya is the most polluted city in the country, while a city in NCR is at third place in this list.
Think tank Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) on Wednesday released a list of 227 polluted cities.  According to this report, after Byrnihat of Meghalaya, Begusarai of Bihar is at second place and Greater Noida of Uttar Pradesh, included in NCR, is at third place.  Whereas Delhi, the city which remains continuously polluted during winter, is at number eight in this list.
Sunil Dahiya, South Asia analyst at CREA, said that in the year 2023, 227 cities with air quality data of more than 75 percent days were studied.  Of these, 85 cities were included under the National Clean Air Program (NCAP).  The data showed that 78 out of 85 cities had PM10 levels above the NAAQS (60 micrograms per cubic metre).
Byrnihat in Meghalaya, which falls under NCAP, recorded the highest annual average PM10 concentration of 301 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023, while Silchar in Assam recorded the lowest PM10 level at 29 micrograms per cubic meter.
