The Supreme Court on Monday gave a major verdict on the petitions challenging the remission of sentence of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang rape case and the murder of seven members of their family during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Supreme Court has canceled the order of premature release of 11 convicts. The premature release of 11 convicts was challenged in the Supreme Court.
On Monday, Justice B.V. A special bench of Justice Nagarathna and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan delivered the verdict. While hearing the petition, the court canceled the remission granted to all the convicts. The Gujarat government had released 11 convicts in the case last year. Now after the court's decision, all the 11 convicts will have to go back to jail. Overturning the decision of the Gujarat government, the bench said that the exercise of power by the state of Gujarat is an example of usurpation of power and abuse of power.
