Himanta Biswa Sharma cabinet decision: Himanta Biswa Sharma cabinet of Assam decided to start the process of socio-economic assessment of five indigenous Muslim communities of Assam, Goriya, Moriya, Deshi, Syed and Jolha.   At the end of the cabinet meeting held at Janata Bhawan, Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Barua said that the cabinet has decided to change the names of Four Regions Development Directorate, Assam to Minority Affairs and Four Regions, Assam Directorate.
The findings of this review will guide the State Government to take appropriate steps aimed at comprehensive socio-political and educational upliftment of the indigenous tribal minorities.  This step has been taken at a time when, just a few months ago, the Nitish Kumar-led government of Bihar released the caste-based census data.  According to these figures, the share of Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) in the total population of the state is 63 percent.
