Lachit Barphukan is very important in the history of Assam.  He is remembered for his bravery and skilled leadership abilities.  Lachit was the commander of the Ahom Empire.  He showed excellent wisdom in the battle of Saraighat in 1671.  The attempt of the Mughal forces led by Ram Singh  to regain control of Kamrup in Assam was foiled.  It was the brave Lachit Barphukan who shook the Mughal Empire.
Lachit Borphukan was also called the Shivaji of the North-East because, like Shivaji, he had failed the Mughals' strategy and forced them to return.  After the capture of Guwahati by the Mughals, he, like Shivaji, had shown them the way out.
24 November 2023 is the 401th birth anniversary of Assamese warrior Lachit Borphukan.  The birth anniversary of the hero who challenged Mughal expansionism in the 16th century is celebrated as 'Lachit Divas' in Assam.
