AM Naik has also come out in support of Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy's statement of working 70 hours a week. Honorary Chairman of L&T AM Naik said that he worked 15-15 hours a day. He also said that after working for long hours, he slept on the table in the office. He has spent more than 50 years building the business of L&T. Earlier, Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy had suggested the youth to work 70 hours every week for nation building. There was a lot of uproar over his suggestion.
According to the information given on L&T's website, AM Naik started his career with the company as a junior engineer. After starting his career in L&T in 1965, he became the Chairman and MD of L&T on 29 December 2003. According to the news published in Times Now, his net worth in August 2023 was Rs 171 crore. From 2012 to 2017, he was the Group Executive Chairman of L&T. In October 2017, he distanced himself from this responsibility.
Naik said that after working 15 hours a day, he used to go back home. After that he used to think about L&T for an hour. He said that former Defense Minister George Fernandes helped in saving L&T during the corporate takeover battle started by Birla. Due to his socialist leanings, Fernandes did not want to let the company go into the hands of any big business house. Naik said that he met many Prime Ministers during his tenure. Also claimed that sometimes the Prime Minister was successful in keeping his government afloat because of L&T. He did not explain this in detail.
