The main reasons for the devastation in Sikkim are rising temperature, melting of glaciers, heavy rainfall, uncontrolled construction and pollution.  Scientists say that the increase in climate change is also a major reason for this.  Scientists have warned that more such disasters may occur with the increase in the number of glacial lakes in the Himalayas.  ,

Flash floods hit Sikkim earlier this month, displacing thousands of people, destroying major infrastructure projects and killing scores of people.  Experts say that other Himalayan states including Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are also in similar danger.  A GLOF is a catastrophic flood caused by the failure of a moraine dam containing a glacial lake.

Environment expert Anjal Prakash said that vulnerable areas include Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh, where many glacial lakes are increasing rapidly due to climate change.  Experts blame GLOFs for melting glaciers, human-induced pollution and uncontrolled manufacturing in the region.
