More than 3,000 tourists are stranded in Lachen and Lachung in Mangan district due to flash floods and road connectivity in Sikkim, although all are safe. Officials said on Saturday (October 7), "The Indian Air Force made several attempts to conduct rescue and relief operations using Mi-17 helicopters, but the rescue could not be carried out due to bad weather."
According to the official, helicopters could not take off from Bagdogra as well as Chaten due to low visibility conditions in Lachen and Lachung due to cloud cover in low-lying areas.
ITBP personnel engaged in rescue work::
Officials said, "Roads to Lachen and Lachung are damaged. Process is on to open an alternative route to Chungthang via Dzonghu to enable rescue teams to proceed there. Teesta Energy has provided assistance for the rescue of tourists and supply of essential commodities to the Chungthang area.A helicopter has also been provided."
