World leaders gathered in New Delhi for the G20 summit made several major announcements on the first day to address the "global confidence deficit", climate change and economic problems.
Key decisions taken on the first day of the summit included a call to end the "global trust deficit", the launch of the Global Biofuel Alliance and the launch of new connectivity networks between the United States, India, Saudi Arabia, and Gulf states.
On the first day of the summit, the G20 members unanimously adopted the Delhi Declaration. which called on states to maintain territorial integrity and international humanitarian law in order to preserve peace and stability.
"All states are called upon to uphold the principles of international law, including territorial integrity and sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and multilateral measures that preserve peace and stability," the declaration said.
China and Russia, whose heads of state did not attend the summit, also agreed with the Delhi Declaration.
But while the declaration calls on all states not to use force to seize territory, it avoids condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said the announcement was not a matter of pride and that only Ukraine's presence would have given the G20 summit participants a better understanding of the real situation.
Members at the G20 summit added that, they will aim to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 and accelerate efforts to phase down coal power in line with national circumstances.
G20 members, which represent 85 percent of global GDP and contribute 80 percent of emissions, however, said they would keep their 2009 Pittsburgh pledge to eliminate and rationalize inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.
The summit also added the African Union as a new permanent member of the G20. which would help drive the new world order and give developing nations a greater say in global decision-making.
Before the second day of the session, the delegates will visit the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at Rajghat in Delhi to pay their respects.
External Affairs Minister S Jayashankar and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant will address the media at 2 pm on Sunday after the conclusion of all the scheduled talks.
