The Sun Temple of Konark is known for its stone carvings. In fact, the temple is built like the giant chariot of the sun. which is drawn by seven horses. The chariot has 12 pairs of wheels. That's 24 wheels in total. Each wheel has magnificent carving. But these wheels tell us many scientific things about our lifestyle.
These wheels explain how the whole world is powered by the energy of the sun. Each wheel has a diameter of 9.9 feet. Each wheel has eight thick and eight thin tiles. These wheels have always been the center of attraction for visitors to the Sun Temple in Konark. Now why is this temple special? Why these wheels are necessary. Understand this.
Seven horses or seven days a week. 12 wheels or twelve months of the year. While their pair i.e. 24 wheels means 24 hours of the day. In addition, 8 thick arrows represent 8 hours, or every three hours. In fact, these wheels are called the Wheel of Life. It also shows when the sun will rise and set. The wheel was built by King Narasimhadeva I in the 13th century.
Each wheel has 8 thick tiles. There are 8 thin tiles. 30 grains are placed in the middle of each seedling. Each grain tells the time of three minutes. which gives a time of three hours. That’s 180 minutes. The thin arrows between each thick arrows indicate the time of 1.5 hours. That's 90 minutes. The thick arrow at the top in the middle indicates the time at 12 pm.
Not only that, 12 wheels don’t just show 12 months. Rather, they also represent the 12 signs. It is also called the Wheel of Law. Each wheel is the same size. But each wheel has scraped different stories. The circular carvings between the wheels indicate different things.
The center of the wheel, the axle, protrudes one foot. Flowers and leaves on the rim. Birds and animals are carved. The circular shapes between the wide arrows depict different poses of women. which show the different functions of their lives.
