Apart from the G-20 summit, India and Britain could talk about a free trade agreement. But there have been strong comments from the UK about the deal, which suggests it could be delayed. On Thursday, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he would not change Britain's strict migration policy for a free trade agreement with India. The decision is likely to shock Indian students studying in the UK.
It is hoped that a free trade agreement between the two countries could be signed this year as both sides agree on the broad framework of the agreement. However, there are several issues on which the two countries disagree. And now such comments coming from the UK seem to complicate matters.
“The prime minister believes that the number of overseas arrivals in the UK is quite high,” a spokesman for Sunak said, according to a report by news agency . 'We want to make it clear that the free trade agreement will not change migration policy, including student visas.'
Earlier, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had put a condition on India's free trade agreement. Addressing his top team on Tuesday, Sunak said Britain would only sign a free trade agreement with India if it benefited the whole of Britain.
“He (Rishi Sunak) said talks are underway with India regarding the free trade agreement but only on those aspects of the prime minister’s agreement,” a spokesman for the British prime minister told media.
India considers the free trade agreement with the UK to be extremely important as it aims to become a major exporter of the UK. Meanwhile, Britain also wants to expand its opportunities for trade after leaving the EU (Brexit). The agreement will give the UK wider access to India for its whisky, premium cars and laws services.
