The United States has been shocked by videos of two women being sexually assaulted and paraded naked in Manipur, which has been ravaged by sectarian clashes. The Biden administration has strongly reacted to the gender discrimination in Manipur.
"I support the Indian government's efforts to seek justice for the victims," a senior Biden administration official said. On May 4, two women were paraded naked and tortured by a group of men in Kangpokpi district.
This heinous incident was condemned across the country. The administration said that ,“We are shocked and appalled by the video of this extreme attack on two women in Manipur. "We extend our deepest sympathies to the survivors of this act of gender-based violence and support the Indian government's efforts to seek justice for them."
Deputy State Department spokesperson Vedanta Patel told reporters at a daily news conference on Tuesday. Patel was responding to a question by a Pakistani journalist about the violence in Manipur.
“As stated earlier, we seek a peaceful and inclusive solution to the violence in Manipur and request the authorities to respond to the humanitarian needs and protect the lives and property of all groups,” Patel added.
