National desk:
The Supreme Court on Monday said proceedings related to violence in Manipur should not be used to escalate violence or create more problems.
The bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud emphasized that the issue should be viewed from a humanitarian perspective keeping in view the limitations of the court in managing security or law and order.
"We do not want these proceedings to be used as a platform to escalate violence and other problems. We must be conscious that we are not running security or law and order. This is a humanitarian issue and it," the CJI said  We need to look at it from that perspective,” he said.  Keeping these aspects in mind, we will hear the case tomorrow."
The court made the remarks while hearing petitions relating to the ongoing violence between the Maitei and Kuki communities in Manipur.  Describing the situation in Manipur as "constantly evolving", Solicitor General of India (SGI) Tushar Mehta presented a status report highlighting the efforts made by the central government to restore normalcy in the state.
Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing on behalf of the cookie groups, raised concerns about serious growth in the state.  Contrary to SG Mehta's previous statement that there were only 10 deaths, the number has increased to 110, he said.
The CJI replied that due to doubt the court should not interfere in the law and order situation.  He requested Gonsalves to make specific recommendations on the next date of hearing.
