News desk: The rules for student elections in the colleges and universities of the state will be drastically changed.
In a message posted on his YouTube channel, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said colleges and universities must make changes to prevent problems after elections.
"Elections in colleges and universities are important because students get a feel of the democratic process by participating in these elections. However, sometimes it is witnessed that the post election celebrations are violent, which is not what we want to see," the CM said .
"Whenever there is violence after an election in a college or a university, if we observe closely, we will find a specific pattern in each of the reported violent incidents.  I constitute a committee to frame rules for student elections in colleges and universities.  Under the leadership of Nani Gopal Mahanta, this committee will check if there is a need to revive the present election procedure," Sarma added.
"The committee will also see if there is a need to strictly implement the guidelines suggested by the Lyngdoh Committee. Moreover, it will also check whether the college and university elections could be held differently, where the talk will be more about the contesting students than."  the parties they represent. We aim to keep these elections an internal property of the colleges and the universities, away from the reach and the influence of outside elements," the CM stressed.
He urged the public to share their views on the issue, saying, "Public participation in such an important issue will only bring in better and balanced suggestions. It pains to see the violent incidents after elections in prestigious institutions like Cotton University."
Along with colleges and universities in the state, there is a need to be stricter by amending the rules and regulations of hostels, the CM further said.
