Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has approached the Gujarat High Court seeking a stay on his conviction in the Modi surname case. He has challenged the lower court order in the High Court. The Surat Sessions Court had on April 20 dismissed Rahul Gandhi's plea seeking stay of conviction.
On March 23, a metropolitan magistrate's court in Surat had sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case filed over a remark made on Modi's surname at an election rally. He was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha. Rahul had said in an election rally on April 13, 2019, "How is Modi the only one who is the equal of all thieves?"
Rahul Gandhi was later granted bail in the case. He then moved the Surat Sessions Court on April 3 challenging his conviction order. He also filed an application for a stay of his sentence. Rahul Gandhi was granted bail but his application for stay of conviction was dismissed on April 20.
The court had also said in its order that as a Member of Parliament and president of the second largest political party, Rahul Gandhi should have been more careful with his words, tell me, when he made this statement He was an MP as well as the National President of the Congress.
