In 2015, a student showed her talent by securing second place in the state in the final year of Higher Secondary Examination. Her name was Shweta Agarwal.
Shweta, a student of KC Das Commerce College, Guwahati, was murdered on December 4,2017 . The victim's body was found half-burnt in the bathroom of her boyfriend Govinda Singhal's residence in Bharalumukh. Govinda Singhal and his mother and sister were suspected of the murder.Police filed chargesheets against the three accused after a quick investigation.The court handed down the final verdict in the case on August 3,2019.
A lower court convicted Govinda Singhal and sentenced him to death.
However, his mother Kamala Devi and sister Bhawani Singhal were acquitted of the murder.
However, the lower court's verdict was challenged in the High Court and Govinda Singhal was acquitted of the death penalty six years after the murder.
The sessions court on Wednesday granted exemption to Govind Singhal from his previous death sentence after the High Court directed the lower court to re-hear the Shweta murder case.
The Court's new ruling has sparked reactions. Shweta's family has also expressed dissatisfaction with Govinda's exemption from the death penalty.
